Getting started with sweepstakes casinos
Everything a first-time player needs, in the order it comes up: what the coins are, why it is legal, how to register, and how a prize gets to your bank.
The two coinsThe two coins
Every sweepstakes casino has two currencies and understanding the difference is nine-tenths of understanding the whole thing.
Gold Coins are play currency. You get a large number free when you register, more every day you log in, and you can buy packages if you want more. Whatever you win playing with them stays as Gold Coins. They never become money. Some casinos call them WOW Coins, Crown Coins, Lucky Coins or Tournament Coins; the rule is identical.
Sweepstakes Coins are the prize currency. You cannot buy them. They come free: a sign-up gift, a bonus attached to Gold Coin packages, daily login rewards, promotions, and a postcard you can mail to the casino. Play them through the required number of times, reach the casino’s minimum, and they can be redeemed for a cash prize, usually one dollar per coin.
The legal idea in one paragraph
Because Sweepstakes Coins can always be obtained free, the games are a promotion rather than a lottery or a wager, and promotions are legal in most states without a gambling licence. That is why “no purchase necessary” appears everywhere, why the postal route exists, and why coin packages are described as entertainment with a free gift attached. Thirteen states have decided to treat the model as gambling anyway and have closed it; Oklahoma follows on November 1, 2026. The legal states page keeps the list.
Sign-up to first prize
- Pick a casino
Our casino list is sorted by rating. If you want one answer, start with Mega Bonanza; if you are 21 or over and want the widest choice, Stake.us.
- Register truthfully
Name, email, date of birth, home address. The details are checked later against your ID, so shortcuts here cost you time.
- Take the welcome package
Gold Coins land immediately, Sweepstakes Coins with them at nearly every casino.
- Verify now, not later
Upload a photo ID and proof of address from your account page. Players who do this on day one report the fastest prizes by a wide margin.
- Switch to Sweepstakes Coins
A toggle in the lobby chooses which coin you play with. Only Sweepstakes Coin play can lead to a prize.
- Reach the minimum and redeem
Fifty SC at most casinos, a hundred at a few. Request a redemption to your bank account and expect it within seven hours to three days depending on the casino.
Getting Sweepstakes Coins for free
Three routes, all free. The daily login bonus at every casino includes a small number of Sweepstakes Coins. Promotions, from social media giveaways to weekly events, add more. And the postal route: a handwritten request card mailed to the address in the casino’s rules returns a fixed number of SC per card, with the amounts and any limits set out in the terms.
The free routes are slower than buying a package, which is the point of the package. They are also the legal foundation of the whole category, so a casino that made them hard to use would be undermining itself.
Five things that cost new players
Chasing Gold Coin totals
Two million Gold Coins is worth exactly nothing in prize terms. Compare the Sweepstakes Coins.
Verifying late
Verification happens before the first prize. Do it at sign-up and the first redemption is as quick as the tenth.
Playing on the wrong coin
Gold Coin play is fun and goes nowhere. Check the toggle.
Ignoring the minimum
Two SC free against a 100 SC minimum is a long road. Know the gap before you start.
Registering from a closed state
Location is checked at login. An account opened on a trip stops working at home.
