Where sweepstakes casinos are legal
Open to adults in thirty-seven states. Thirteen have shut the door since 2025 and Oklahoma follows on November 1, 2026. This page is the current list, with what each state did and why.

Casinos check your location every time you log in, so an account opened elsewhere stops working the moment you connect from one of these.

The other thirty-seven states
Outside the fourteen states above, sweepstakes play is open to adults who meet the casino’s age rule. Most set 18. Stake.us and High 5 Casino set 21 everywhere, and a few states require 21 for every casino. Each review on this site shows the age rule in its fact strip.
Casinos decide their own availability, and two casinos can read the same statute differently, which is why one may refuse a state another accepts. If your first choice turns you away, a second casino may not. Try before concluding your state is closed.
Prizes count as taxable income. Casinos issue a 1099 above the federal threshold, and state rules vary. We are not tax advisers; a big prize is worth a conversation with one.
Travelling? Location is checked at login, not just at sign-up. Playing from a closed state while away can freeze an account with a pending prize inside it.
How the list got this long
For years only Washington and Idaho were firmly closed, with Michigan, Nevada and Montana excluded by some casinos and not others. In 2025 the picture changed fast: Nevada, Montana and Connecticut passed dedicated bans that took effect that autumn, New Jersey and New York followed, and California’s AB 831 arrived on January 1, 2026. Indiana, Maine, Tennessee and Louisiana enacted bans in their 2026 sessions, and Oklahoma’s takes effect on November 1, 2026.
Other states debated bills in 2026 that did not pass, Maryland among them. We review this page monthly; the date at the top is the last check. Casinos usually email registered players before any closure.
Four details that decide whether you get paid
- Register with the address you live at
Sign-up accepts almost anything; verification does not, and verification happens when a prize is waiting.
- Read the age rule
Eighteen at most casinos, twenty-one at some, and twenty-one for all casinos in certain states.
- Expect a location check at every login
Casinos confirm you are in an open state each time you sign in.
- Match your details
Account name, ID and bank account must agree for a redemption to clear.
